HAIR CARE FACTS

Did you know that one of the greatest cause of most hair thinning occurs from spilt end damage? Also did you know that there is no way to repair a split end outside of cutting it?

HERE'S WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

There is only one way to repair a split end. It must be cut. Some believe that  when there is extreme damage due to heat or chemical misuse, that a big CHOP must be performed. Although that is a faster way to reduce the spread of split ends, it's not alway's neccessary. You can speak with your hair care specialist in reguards to developing a trim regiment. This is a process where over a course of several weeks, your Stylist or Barber will take measures to trim those damaged area's until most if not all of the damage is repaired.

COMMON CAUSES OF SPLIT ENDS

* IMPROPER COMB USAGE

* EXCESSIVE BRUSHING

* HEAT/ CHEMICAL DAMAGE

* OVER PROCESSING

* LACK OF CARE/TRIMMING

THE THREE STAGES OF HAIR GROWTH

In the anagen phase of growth, your follicles bury themselves in to the skin to nourish the new hair fibers being created. The longer this process takes the longer and faster hair grows. This phase is determined by genetics and supplemented with proper diet and internal health.

During the catagen phase, the follicle renews itself. Over the course of about two weeks it shrinks, cuts the hair off from the nourishment received in the anagen phase and forces the hair “out” causing the hair shaft to be pushed upward. This is known as “new growth.”

The telogen phase is where the follicle remains dormant for one to four months. At any given point, 10-15% of the hairs on your head are in this phase, which explains why you may have portions of hair that seem to grow faster than others. Once this time has passed, the anagen phase starts again.

 Common Myths:

TRIMMING THE HAIR MAKES IT GROW BACK FASTER

Contrary to popular belief, the hair grows from the root out. Trimming the ends have no direct correlation to hair growth. But it does significantly reduce the damage caused by split ends. When the hair is trimmed this prevents the split end from traveling down the hair shaft. Split ends are like a run in your panty hose if not repaired. It will continue to travel.

BRUSH THE HAIR AT LEAST 100 TIMES A DAY

Brushing your hair often will not cause it to grow faster. It won’t stimulate your scalp and hair follicle. Excesssive brushing of the hair can lead to damage, especially if you’re using a brush with harsh or sharp bristles. It is best recommended to brush your hair before you sleep, to get rid of tangles and knots. Starting from the ends and gradually working your way to the roots.

COLD WATER MAKES YOUR HAIR SHINY

You cannot make hair shine with cold water. The only way to improve your hair is to directly treat the hair follicles and the scalp. However, you can damage your hair with high heat, such as blow drying often, straighteners, and constant hair coloring treatments.

STRESS CAUSES GREY HAIR

Human hair starts to grey mostly due to genetics. Like a clock alarm going off, sooner or later our hair pigment starts to fade and we go grey. Plucking a grey hair to get rid of it because it’s “unsightly” isn’t going to cause more to spring up. However, plucking hairs irritates the follicle and those surrounding it, which can lead to unhealthy hair growth.

Although stress can have a physiological effect on the human body and mind. It is believed stress raises hydrogen peroxide levels in the hair follicles which leads to bleaching of the hair. We’re not sure how true that is, but either way, grey hairs still come down to genetics.

THE HAIR STOPS GROWING AFTER A CERTAIN POINT

There is a theory that everyone has a terminal growth point at which hair completely stops growing, however this is not yet supported with concrete, scientific evidence, so you can assume that your hair is always in the growth cycle. This is not to be confused with terminal length—the point at which hair seems to be unable to remain in tact without cutting due to breakage.

Because growth is genetically predetermined, you cannot physically alter the rate at which your hair grows, nor do you have control of its texture, color or density, but you can improve the health of the new strands and retain length so your growth is visible and your hair is healthy.
